The Philosophy

"Where science meets the ancient wisdom of Chinese medicine"

Every Matie blend is built on three pillars: rigorous botanical science, the thousand-year tradition of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and the art of flavour. We translate the complexity of TCM — its Natures, Flavours, and Channel Affinities — into something you can hold in your hand and taste.

Jasmine Pearls

Jasmine Pearls

The art of stillness

Hand-rolled jasmine pearls unfurl slowly in cold-carbonated spring water, releasing layer upon layer of white floral sweetness. Silver Needle white tea and osmanthus blossom complete the composition — a drink that asks nothing of you except to pause.

Osmanthus Oolong

Depth without weight

A slow-roasted Wuyi oolong forms the backbone — earthy, mineral, with a long finish of dried apricot. Osmanthus blossom, revered in Chinese medicine for its ability to warm the stomach and ease the mind, drifts through each sip like autumn sunlight through paper screens.

Silver Needle Rosé

Softness as strength

Silver Needle — the most prized of white teas, harvested only in early spring from unopened buds — meets hibiscus and dried rose petals. The result is a blush-pink sparkling tea of extraordinary delicacy: barely-there tannins, a whisper of tartness, and a lingering sweetness.

The Cycle Collection

Four phases.
Four teas.

The menstrual cycle is not a single experience — it is four distinct physiological phases, each with its own hormonal landscape, energetic quality, and nutritional needs. The Cycle Collection maps Traditional Chinese Medicine directly onto this rhythm, offering a different blend for each phase of the month.

Menstrual Phase · Days 1–5

Flow

Release with grace

The menstrual phase calls for warmth, nourishment, and gentle movement of Qi and Blood. Flow is built around Red Date (Da Zao) and Goji Berry (Gou Qi Zi) — two of the most revered tonics in Chinese medicine for replenishing Blood and supporting the Liver. Ginger root adds gentle warmth to ease cramping and support circulation, while rose petals move stagnant Qi and lift the spirit.

Key Ingredients & TCM Actions

Nourishes Liver Blood and Kidney Yin, brightens the eyes
Warms the middle, disperses cold, relieves cramping

Follicular Phase · Days 6–13

Bloom

Rise into possibility

As oestrogen rises and energy returns, the follicular phase is a time of renewal and building. Bloom supports this upward movement with Chrysanthemum (Ju Hua) to clear residual heat from the previous cycle, Jasmine (Mo Li Hua) to gently lift the spirit and move Qi, and Astragalus (Huang Qi) to tonify Wei Qi and build resilience. Peppermint provides a fresh, ascending energy that mirrors the season of spring.

Key Ingredients & TCM Actions

Clears Liver heat, brightens the eyes, calms wind
Moves Qi, lifts the spirit, harmonises the Stomach
Tonifies Wei Qi, strengthens the Spleen, raises Yang
Disperses wind-heat, clears the head, moves Liver Qi

03

Ovulatory Phase · Days 14–16

Radiate

Full expression

The ovulatory phase is the peak of the cycle — Yang energy at its fullest, the body open and expressive. Radiate is designed to support this peak without tipping into excess heat. Hibiscus (Luo Shen Hua) cools and moves Blood while providing a vivid crimson colour; Schisandra Berry (Wu Wei Zi) — the Five-Flavour Fruit — astringes and consolidates Qi so energy is sustained rather than scattered; Rose Hip provides Vitamin C and gentle Yin nourishment.

Key Ingredients & TCM Actions

Luteal Phase · Days 17–28

Settle

Ground before the turn

As progesterone rises and the body prepares to shed, the luteal phase can bring heaviness, irritability, and disrupted sleep. Settle addresses this with Lavender (Xun Yi Cao) to calm the Shen and ease anxiety; Chamomile (Mu Ju) to harmonise the Liver and Stomach and reduce bloating; Sour Jujube Seed (Suan Zao Ren) — one of the most important herbs for insomnia in the TCM pharmacopoeia — to nourish Heart Blood and quiet the mind.

The Science Behind the Sip

Understanding TCM

Four Natures

Every ingredient in Chinese medicine carries a thermal nature — Cold, Cool, Neutral, Warm, or Hot. These properties interact with the body's own temperature, making each blend a considered act of balance rather than a simple flavour decision.

Five Flavours

Sour, Bitter, Sweet, Pungent, and Salty — each flavour corresponds to an organ system and a physiological action. Sweet tonifies and harmonises; bitter clears heat and descends; pungent disperses and moves.

Channel Affinities

Herbs and botanicals are understood to enter specific meridian pathways in the body. An ingredient with affinity for the Liver channel, for example, is used to support the smooth flow of Qi and ease emotional tension.

The Cycle & TCM

In TCM, the menstrual cycle maps onto the interplay of Yin and Yang: the follicular phase is rising Yang; ovulation is peak Yang; the luteal phase is descending into Yin; menstruation is the deepest Yin. Each Matie Cycle blend supports the body's natural movement through this arc.
